The following outlines the Company’s focus on Climate Action:

Livery Climate Action Group

The Plumbers’ Company recently signed up to the Livery Climate Action Group and is committed to creating its own Climate Action Plan.

Background

The City of London Corporation has adopted a radical Climate Action Strategy, which sets out how the organisation will achieve net zero, build climate resilience, and champion sustainable growth, both in the UK and globally, over the next two decades. The Corporation has committed to:

  • Achieve net zero carbon emissions from our own operations by 2027
  • Achieve net zero carbon emissions across our investments and supply chain by 2040
  • Support the achievement of net zero for the Square Mile by 2040
  • Invest £68m over the next six years to support these goals of which £15m is dedicated to preparing the Square Mile for extreme weather events.

The Livery Climate Action Group (LCAG) was established by Alderman Alison Gowman in 2021 to assist the City of London Livery companies and Guilds in managing their impact on climate change and the environment by reducing carbon emissions and making responsible use of resources.

Stage One

At the Court meeting on 17th January 2023, following consideration of a paper from the Master at the time Paul Nash, the Court unanimously approved joining LCAG.

At the Court meeting on 26th April 2023, it was announced that the Company has become a member of LCAG, and that Court Assistant Gary Wingrove will be the official Company representative, and as such will be the single point of liaison with LCAG.

At the Education and Technical Committee meeting on 12th September 2023, it was announced that all Committee members are now part of one or two working groups, including a working group to support the LCAG.

Stage Two

Master David Adams has committed to establishing a committee/working group to build a Climate Action Plan for the Company with the help of the template provided by LCAG.

This will bring together interested members and start by considering the Company’s aims and objectives, and follows on from his Installation Lunch speech on 17th October 2023, when he outlined his key theme as being ‘International & Environmental’.
