The Master’s Midweek Break – September 2021
We all enjoyed a fabulous time on the Master’s midweek break to the Cornish Riviera in and around St Mawes, Cornwall on 28 to 30 September 2021. Peter and Bridget Rumley treated us to some super hospitality and sumptuous fare in some beautiful locations.
The break started at Olga Polizzi’s Grade One listed Hotel Endsleigh on the Devon/Cornwall border for an afternoon cream tea. Unfortunately rainfall of biblical proportions prevented us from visiting the woodland gardens, waterfalls, follies and grottos, but the cream tea was exquisite – I’m not sure we would have had time to complete both!

We then drove on to St Mawes and Olga Polizzi’s scenic Hotel Tresanton, with it’s stunning location overlooking the sea and St Antony’s Head.

Following a ‘quiet’ informal dinner that evening, we awoke to sunshine and a smooth crossing to Falmouth on the ‘Duchess of Cornwall’ ferry to visit the Falmouth Maritime Museum.

We then sailed back to St Mawes for sandwiches at the St Mawes Sailing Club before a coach trip to the beautiful Caerhays Castle nestling in its private gardens full of magnolia’s, it houses the National Magnolia Collection, rhododendrons and camellias. They would make a stunning, colourful display in spring, so well worth coming back then, but owner Charles Williams made up for it with his ‘colourful’ welcome speech, after some canapés and drinks.

We concluded our trip to St Mawes back at the Hotel Tresanton with a splendid champagne reception on the terrace and a four-course black-tie dinner, including entertainment from the Rhos Keur male voice choir singing sea-shanties.

Past Master Alec Moir giving the vote of thanks
Past Master Alec Moir gave the traditional thanks to the Master and Bridget for such a lovely break to which we all added our enthusiastic agreement! We had a great time! And we all managed to get home despite the fuel shortages!
