Liveryman and Past President CIPHE Melville Gumbs EngTech MCIPHE RP is fundraising to help deliver vital education in Rwanda by volunteering to teach plumbing and heating skills. Help Mel reach his fundraising goal by donating or sharing his GoFundMe page: https://gofund.me/2709ee53.
UPDATE on 15th August:
Mel is currently at Rwanda Polytechnic, in the capital Kigali, teaching around 44 enthusiastic students from all over the country on subjects such as the technical level of commercial plumbing, technical drawings, medical gas pipework via sprinkler systems, and hydronics.
Jean Claude Twagirimana, Founder and President of Rwanda Plumbers Organization told Mel:
Thank you for coming to Rwanda to increase skills and knowledge in plumbing!
Says Mel:
In October 2023, I visited Shanghai for the Worlds Plumbing Conference and attended a talk which opened my eyes to the suffering in Rwanda following genocide.
There is a serious lack of basic technical support, and they need urgent help.
I am volunteering to go out to Rwanda in August and September 2024 to teach vital plumbing and heating skills to create positive change to both the economy and living conditions.
Some of the important subjects I will be covering include: gas pipelines, above and below ground drainage, water works and above ground sewage.
My hope is that by teaching these life-changing skills it can help form positive change to the deep suffering in Rwanda, and I would be very grateful for any donation large or small towards it.
Senior Steward Philippa Stary praised Mel:
It’s fantastic to see this personal initiative by Mel to use his considerable plumbing skills and experience in such a potentially impactful way. I speak for all the Stewards in wishing Mel the very best in his endeavours.
