Silent Ceremony – The Admission of the New Lord Mayor

City News

Every year, on the Friday before the second Sunday in November, the new Lord Mayor is sworn into office at the Guildhall. The ceremony is known as the “Silent Ceremony” because, aside from a short declaration by the incoming Lord Mayor, no speeches are made.

The ceremony is witnessed by the Aldermen and the City officers. It is as rich in pageantry as it is ancient in history and although it only lasts some twenty minutes  it is a great piece of theatre.  This year’s ceremony is on Friday 8th November at 3.00pm and if you would like to attend online ticket applications are open in August only. Please note that this ceremony is usually heavily over-subscribed, so apply early if you would like to go. If successful, your ticket(s) will be emailed to you ahead of the ceremony.
