Plumbers’ Table – September 2024
On Monday, 16th September, 37 Liverymen and guests, including several prospective members of the Company, gathered for a most convivial lunch at Ironmongers’ Hall, meticulously organised by Senior Steward Philippa Stary.
The occasion began with a reception in the drawing room, where members of the Company were able to mingle with other Livery groups attending the Monday Lunch Club, including members of the Ironmongers’ Company’s Iron Committee, meeting to review grants for Iron Projects.
A delicious three-course lunch was then served in the main banqueting hall.
Upper Warden Charles Brooks gave a short speech at the end of the lunch, thanking the Hall for their hospitality and announcing the wonderful news that Ruben Duggan (the Company’s most recent gold medal winner) had just won a silver medal in Plumbing & Heating at WorldSkills Lyon 2024.
The Upper Warden also told the table about how Past Master Charles Yuill had been the instigator of this informal event, which gained a round of applause.
The present Ironmongers’ Hall, now surrounded by the Barbican development, was opened in 1925 after the previous hall was severely damaged during an air raid in 1917. The Hall, built in Tudor Revival style, is Grade II listed.
The food was excellent, particularly the roast, and this event continues to be a popular choice for members of the Company. A very useful innovation was place cards showing individuals’ menu choices.
Look out for details nearer the time of the next Plumbers’ Table, which will be on Monday, 10th February 2025.
