Plumbers retain the Newson-Smith Cup!
On 20th June 2024, whilst the main Livery focus was on the Master’s Break on the Isle of Wight, a trusty band of PGS golfers were playing in the Tallow Chandlers’ Golf Day at The Drift Golf Club in Surrey competing to retain The Newson-Smith Cup we won last year.
With Graeme Setterfield held up in the Wisley Junction roadworks, it was touch and go if all the team would make it on time. Luckily Graeme arrived with a screech of his tyres and rushed to the tee to have his photo taken, and then creamed his drive down the centre of the fairway. Pure class by our reigning Plumbers’ Champion.
Excellence was the order of the day with Paul Healy birdieing two par 3s – regretably they were not the nearest the pin holes. However, Captain Tony Peters nailed his tee shots on the other two par 3s and won both nearest the pin prizes.
Paul made up for it by winning the longest drive, and Tony Walters in his buggy, which seemed to have a mind of its own beeping on back swings, helped the team make a clean sweep of all the prizes with a team score of 102 points, best 2 of 4 stableford points: an increase of 9 on our winning score, last year!
An excellent defence team. Well played all!
The course and lunch were superb, and Peter Cormack, who was retiring after 15 years of running the event, was thanked in Tony’s speech.
The Tallow Chandlers are also standing down as hosts, and from next year onwards, the winning team from the previous year has to organise the golf day.
Mark the 19th June 2025 in your diary for the Newson-Smith Cup golf day at The Drift GC hosted by the Plumbers!
