Marketors’ Golf Day at Verulam Golf Club – The Inter-Livery Ryder Cup 2023

Golf Society News

The Worshipful Company of Marketors’ Inter-Livery Golf Competition is also dubbed The Inter-Livery Ryder Cup because it is held at Verulam Golf Club in Hertfordshire, the home club of Sam Ryder, the founder of the famous golf competition between Europe and the USA.

Last year, we won both the team and individual competitions, and we entered two teams again to defend them.

L to R: Tony Peters, Mike Samuel, Jane Palmer, Richard Harvey, Ian Palmer, Trevor Wilson, Luke Peters, Paul Nash

The golf day is run to raise money for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

On 3rd July this year, with 17 other teams challenging us, we mounted a spirited defence on a well- prepared course, with lightening fast greens and some devilish pin positions!

Sadly, we weren’t able to repeat the successes of last year, but Richard Harvey managed a very good three under par to his handicap to come third in his defence of the individual trophy. The winners of the team competition were the Markettors’ One team with a fine 130 points. Our Plumbers A team scored 114 points and Plumbers B team 109 points.

A fun day nevertheless, with generous hospitality. We look forward to next year’s competition on 1st July 2024.

And just to finish, the signature hole on the course is number 11, where you play to a blind green with the iconic St Alban’s Abbey as the backdrop.

Here is Master and PGS Chairman Paul Nash teeing-off. We won’t ask him where his ball went!
