Company News

The Clerk is very sorry to report the death of Liveryman Sylvia Moys MBE.

Sylvia was a Common Councillor until around 2017, and a member of the Livery since 2004, although she had not been able to attend events in recent years.

Liveryman Mike Swallow wrote to say:

It was I who brought her into the Livery in recognition of her great contribution as Peter Lerwill’s consort – he was not married and knew her through the insurance profession. He was terminally ill and might not have got through the final months as Master but for her. He died not long after his Ladle Dinner and I thought it only right that her connection with the Company should not be abruptly severed. She was very generous to me in my first year in sharing her great knowledge of the City Corporation and Livery.

Hon Archivist & Curator Michael Cooper added:

Conferral of Honorary Liveryman Status on Mrs Sylvia Moys CC is noted in the Minutes of the Court of Assistants’ Meeting held at Wax Chandlers’ Hall on Thursday 15th July 2004: In a short ceremony, Mrs Sylvia Moys CC, who had acted as the Escort to the late Peter Lerwill during his year as Master, was admitted as an Honorary Liveryman of the Company. Mrs Moys thanked the Master and the Court for the exceptional honour bestowed on her.

Her MBE was for services to the City of London Corporation and Education in Croydon. Source: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/2938527
