Visit to the Royal Observatory & Cutty Sark
On Thursday 31st October, visit the home of Greenwich Mean Time and stand on the world famous Prime Meridian Line with our newly elected Master Charles and Mistress Penny Brooks, for their first social event of their year.
After our tour of the Royal Observatory, we will make our way down the hill to the Cutty Sark for afternoon tea and a tour of the famous tea clipper ship built in 1869.
The Observatory was commissioned in 1675 by King Charles II, and the building, on the old hilltop site of Greenwich Castle chosen by Sir Christopher Wren as being part of the Royal Estate, was completed the following year. It was later named Flamsteed House after John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal. [Main image source.]
