    World Toilet Day is an official United Nations international observance day on 19 November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. Worldwide, 4.5 billion people live without "safely managed sanitation" and around 892 million people do not have a toilet.  Plumbers are essential craftsmen in the fight for good global public health.  Celebrate World Toilet Day with WHO on 19 Nov by joining a webinar (click here) introducing the new WHO Guidelines on Sanitation and Health hosted by UN-Water and SuSanA.  To obtain and read the Guidelines click here.

  • Master Educator Seminar - Monday 19th November 6pm-8pm

    The Master Educator, Dr Lis Goodwin, has arranged a series of Master's Seminars of interest to the wider Livery, in her field of expertise which is Mathematics.  The second Seminar is about Primary Maths and a project in a challenging area of Kent to develop young people's Maths abilities and interests.  The Gravesham Maths Collaboration is kindly supported financially by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths who will be joining us for the Seminar.

    The first 18/19 Master's Seminar was a successful collaboration with the Royal Society themed on Machine Learning and Education in a Data Rich World.  The Primary Maths Seminar will be held at the London Campus of Anglia Ruskin University, starting at 6pm on Monday 19th November.  We have drinks first, followed by the Seminar, then food and drinks to help informal discussions, ending at about 8pm.  Venue details are below and in the attached.  All Members of Livery Companies are welcome to attend.     The Master Plumber and her Consort, Fiona and Nicholas, look forward to welcoming you to the glorious setting of our Company Church, St. Magnus the Martyr, Lower Thames Street, to celebrate the coming of Christmas. Tis the season of goodwill and joy! Join in and help celebrate at this year’s Carol Service on Tuesday 11 December 2018. Mulled wine will be available from 1800 to lubricate your singing voices and the Service starts at 1830. Afterwards there will be a finger buffet and minced pies, with wine, soft drinks and coffee.  If you’re already helping Santa and his elves with the Christmas shopping, take some time off and relax.  You can even bring your own little elves too!

    You are invited to join the Master on Thursday 6th December 2018 for a unique visit to Charing Cross Underground Station. Explore the disused spaces of Charing Cross Underground Station and go behind closed doors to exclusive areas not accessible to the public. This is a unique opportunity to view sites where blockbuster movies such as Skyfall, Paddington Bear and TV’s 24 were filmed. Places are limited to 30.

    Plumbers in the Lord Mayor’s procession

    On Saturday our Almoner, Caroline Walsh, and our PM, Erica Stary took part in the Lady Masters’ float in the Lord Mayor’s Show.  They were marching to say thank you to the thousands of men and women who worked hard over many years to achieve the vote. Undoubtedly, the Great War was a major contributor - the work done by women whilst their men were away in the trenches was rewarded, (Erica was told that the Government was afraid of a rebellion from the women who had discovered freedom and now the war was ending realized they would shortly be back in their homes controlled by their husbands – but that may be apocryphal).
    Be that as it may, the float had about 50 participants, mainly current and past masters from across the livery augmented by women, such as Caroline, making great contributions in the City and Livery.
    The crowd welcomed them with open arms – photos galore were taken, they even had a short slot on the BBC – and all had a great day.

    Today, 11th November 2018, Past Master Rodney Cartwright and Court Assistant and Acting Clerk Air Commodore Paul Nash remembered Liveryman Captain Aubrey Hill who died on active service 100 years ago and is buried in the British Military Cemetry at Fillièvres in France.     100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War

    On Monday 5 November The Upper Warden, Dr Peter Rumley, who represented the Master, Dame Fiona Woolf, who was otherwise engaged representing the City in Hamburg,  together with the Acting Clerk, Air Cdre Paul Nash,  placed a small cross, on behalf of the Plumbers’ Company,  in the Royal British Legion's Garden of Remembrance at St Paul’s Cathedral.  The Monday morning before Remembrance Sunday, all Livery Company Masters and Clerks gather in St Paul's Cathedral Churchyard for the annual City ceremony at which each Master, together with the Lord Mayor and other civic and military leaders gather to remember all those who have lost their lives on active service to the Crown, and honours the service of the Armed Forces and veterans, and the contribution of their families.  The Band of the Coldstream Guards attended.

    A Time of Change - Installation Day

    Every year in mid October, following a meeting of the Court, a unique ceremony takes place in the Company church of St Magnus the Martyr witnessed by the Court, Liverymen, family and friends.  Using oaths agreed by the Court over 400 years ago, the Master installs their successor as Master of the Company.  The new Master then installs the Wardens thus completing the Top Team for the ensuing year.  This year the outgoing Master, Robert Burgon, installed Dame Fiona Woolf as his successor and she then installed Dr Peter Rumley as Upper Warden and Nick Jones as renter Warden.
    Following this secular ceremony, the Cardinal Rector Liveryman Phillip Warner led the Installation Service.  The Master, Wardens and the Court then processed along Lower Thames Street to Vinters’ Hall for a reception and lunch.
    The Master, in a duo act with her husband Nicholas, thanked the Immediate Past Master Robert and his wife Sheila for their service to the Company during their year in office.  The Master then gave some tantalising glimpses of next year’s programme.
    Following the lunch, the Master presented apprentice plumber Rebecca Russel with the Plumbers’ Company Silver Medal recognising her achievements in her training.
